Green Music Festival 2025: Sounds that Embrace the Earth, from Umbria to Carnegie Hall

From June to November 2025, the ninth edition of the International Green Music Festival transforms Umbria, and beyond, into a vast open-air stage, where music transcends mere sound to become an immersive experience, a journey of emotion woven into the fabric of nature. With 100 concerts across 40 towns, over 200 artists from four continents, and a grand finale at New York’s Carnegie Hall on 17 November, this unique festival, the largest “green” event in Italy, blends artistry with a deep-rooted commitment to sustainability. Conceived by Maestro Maurizio Mastrini, its visionary Artistic Director, Green Music sprang from a local dream that has grown into a global celebration yet remains tethered to the authentic beauty of the land. Mastrini explains that the festival is born from the heart, aiming to spark environmental awareness through the magic of music, offering multisensory experiences often staged at sunset, when the sky glows with warm, enveloping hues, enveloping audiences in a surreal atmosphere of scents, sights, and sounds. This year, the festival spans two-thirds of Umbria, delivering unforgettable moments: from dawn concerts greeting the day to the intimate, candlelit Candle Music evenings, where hundreds of flickering flames create a spellbinding mood. A pioneer in innovation, Green Music holds a charming record as the first to stage concerts in Straw Theatres, ephemeral amphitheatres crafted from woven bales of straw, blending seamlessly with the landscape.

These biodegradable structures turn fields into spaces of wonder, where music and nature intertwine. The festival also pairs music with local flavours in Sounds and Tastes events, marrying performances with wine and regional delicacies, creating a sensory journey that resonates, touches, and lingers. The artist lineup is a vibrant tapestry, featuring luminaries like Orietta Berti, Luca Barbarossa, Alessandro Haber, Stefano Fresi, Tony Esposito, and José Cuenca, alongside others whose art melds with the silence and light of Umbria’s landscapes. From Montefalco’s vineyards, suspended between sky and earth, to Cascia’s spiritual rebirth, Castiglione del Lago’s lakeside charm, Passignano sul Trasimeno’s serene waters, Orvieto’s artistic treasures, Giove’s verdant embrace, the historic Castello di Montali, and towns like Sellano, Piegaro, Montegabbione, and Montone, the festival weaves music into the region’s medieval villages, ancient stones, and natural light. Every event is zero-impact and free to attend, ensuring culture is accessible to all, with performances in vineyards, woodlands, and historic hamlets, designed to honour the environment. Unique formats include dawn and dusk concerts, the evocative Candle Music nights, and performances in Straw Theatres, where the rustic simplicity of straw bales creates natural, fleeting venues.

This year, the festival celebrates global rhythms, with collaborations from the Bolivian and Ethiopian embassies, Spanish music led by maestro Manuel Cuenca, and tributes to tango and Astor Piazzolla, embracing diversity and the raw emotion only music can evoke. Green Music is more than a series of concerts; it’s a love letter to nature, art, and humanity, inviting us to slow down, listen with all our senses, and be surprised by the simple and profound. Born from the earth and soaring far, this festival proves music can change the world when it listens to the land, to others, and to ourselves.
