Fashion as a Social Asset: The Example of “Beyond Words” and the Commitment of Institutions

In today’s world, fashion is increasingly taking on a central role not only as an aesthetic and cultural expression but also as a tool for social transformation. The event “Beyond Words”, promoted by the Modelli si Nasce Association in collaboration with the Department for Major Events, Tourism, Sport, and Fashion of Roma Capitale, stands as a powerful example of how the fashion world can become a meaningful vehicle for inclusion, awareness, and change.

Kicking off on April 1st at the Salone delle Fontane and followed by a photography exhibition at Palazzo Braschi inaugurated on April 2nd—World Autism Awareness Day—Beyond Words put twenty young autistic models in the spotlight. What walked the runway weren’t just garments, but stories, emotions, and identities that often go unseen in society.

The symbolic and practical value of an event like this goes far beyond fashion in the traditional sense. It’s a cultural and political act that challenges conventional notions of beauty and talent, pushing toward a fashion industry that is accessible, ethical, and truly inclusive.

This approach was strongly supported by Councillor Alessandro Onorato, who stated: “Events like Beyond Words show that fashion can and must be a tool for breaking down barriers.”

Indeed, Roma Capitale is paving a new path in how fashion events are conceived: no longer just showcases of trends, but platforms for meaningful social dialogue. In this context, fashion becomes a “social asset”, capable of generating value on a human, educational, and civic level.

The photography exhibition at Palazzo Braschi—open to the public until April 21st—is the natural continuation of the runway show: a visual journey into the world of the project’s young protagonists, captured through the lens of Danilo Falà. The images, accompanied by a short film by Federico Papagna, speak of uniqueness, dignity, and silent strength. They speak beyond words.

At a time when inclusion is too often reduced to a slogan, initiatives like Beyond Words show that it is possible to create culture, fashion, and policy in a truly meaningful way. And that Rome, thanks to the commitment of figures like Onorato, can become a European benchmark for fashion that includes, welcomes, and uplifts.
