Italy has the primacy at the European level for PDO and PGI with a system of geographical indications that develops a value of more than 20 billion euros and employs 890 thousand people engaged in the supply chains.
This is what emerges from an analysis by Coldiretti released on the occasion of the publication of the decree by which the Ministry of Agriculture, Food Sovereignty and Forestry makes 25 million euros available to protection consortia to support marketing, information and dissemination, and development actions for PDO and PGI products. Italy goes first in organic in Europe with 80 thousand workers and 5547 traditional food products. Italy is the first EU producer of rice, wheat, vegetables, and greens typical of the Mediterranean diet. As for fruit it excels in such productions as apples, pears, cherries hazelnuts and chestnuts.
