Altamedica, Italy’s foremost centre for genetic research and diagnostics, has entered into a significant international partnership with Prequel Genetics, a specialist distributor of genomic technologies, which will bring Italian-developed diagnostic platforms and patents to eighteen countries across Europe, South America, and the Middle East.
The agreement, signed by Professor Claudio Giorlandino, scientific director of Altamedica, Dr Marco Costantini, the company’s chief operating officer, and Nebojsa Petrovic on behalf of the partner firm, extends the reach of Italian innovation to Albania, Serbia, Montenegro, Kosovo, Croatia, Slovenia, Romania, Greece, Cyprus, Lebanon, Spain, Hungary, Egypt, the United Arab Emirates, Argentina, Chile, Peru, and Mexico, thereby strengthening Italy’s standing in global genomic medicine.
Far from being merely a commercial transaction, the deal marks an important step in transferring Italian scientific expertise to parts of the world where access to advanced genetic testing remains limited. The technologies involved include sophisticated bioinformatics platforms and molecular diagnostics applied to prenatal genetics – notably the ability to sequence the entire fetal exome from maternal blood – as well as specialised protocols in neurogenetics, cardiogenetics, nutrigenetics, and neuroimmunology, among them innovative tests aimed at preventing autism-spectrum disorders linked to anti-folate receptor antibodies.
“This represents a milestone of extraordinary scientific and cultural significance,” Professor Giorlandino remarked, emphasising how the collaboration with Prequel Genetics establishes a unique international distribution network and enables the export not only of products but of cutting-edge expertise. At a time when genomics is reshaping the very foundations of prevention and treatment, Italy is proving it can take a leading role, drawing on the methodological rigour and inventive flair that have long distinguished its medical research.
The initiative bolsters the reputation of Made in Italy beyond the realms of fashion and design, extending it to a vital sphere such as global health, helping to raise diagnostic standards in emerging nations, facilitating the transfer of knowledge, and promoting early diagnoses that can tangibly improve clinical outcomes for mothers, fetuses, and adult patients alike. Through this accord, Altamedica firmly establishes itself among the world leaders in precision medicine, carrying the Italian contribution well beyond European and Mediterranean shores.
