Ben Ryé: Donnafugata’s iconic wine

Ben Ryé, Donnafugata‘s Passito di Pantelleria, has won top honours in the 2023 editions of all the Italian Wine Guides, a unanimous assessment that not only underlines the uniqueness of this now iconic wine and places it at the top of an ideal classification of Italian wines, but also makes it a reference model for international critics along with the great sweet wines such as Sauternes, Tokay and Mosel. Our Ben Ryé is the expression of a territory that imposes extreme conditions: no water sources, incessant winds, steeply sloping terrain and terracing. The vines are trained to the very low, almost crawling sapling system, and all the agricultural practices require a great deal of manual labour: from pruning to sconcatura, from harvesting to de-stemming the sultanas, to maintaining the 40 km of dry-stone walls that we have in our 68 hectares of vineyards” says Antonio Rallo of Donnafugata. “This is a context of heroic viticulture to which we have been dedicated for over 30 years, and these results reward the work of a passionate and extraordinary team.”
